It’s my first year of college physics, and I’m performing about as well as the average student in the class, which means I’m not doing very well—I’m failing. This class is undeniably challenging, and I’m struggling to figure out how to improve my situation. After several weeks of this academic battle, some of my classmates decide to approach the professor and plead with him to assign us some homework. It was something I didn’t realize I needed at the time: homework. Fortunately, our professor started providing us with optional, ungraded homework assignments. I devoted hours each week to completing these optional, ungraded assignments, and they turned out to be a game-changer for me.
